DVSA Update for MOT Equipment Calibration

The DVSA has recently updated its guidance for MOT test stations regarding equipment maintenance, calibration and record-keeping. These updates are particularly relevant for garages using ATL (Automated Test Lanes) and OPTL (One Person Test Lanes), and it is essential that all MOT equipment meets the new standards.

You can view the official DVSA update directly here.

What’s Changed in the DVSA MOT Testing Guide?

The updated guidance clarifies how often steering and suspension play detectors must be maintained and who can carry out this work.

New Maintenance Periods

According to the latest DVSA update, all MOT equipment must be kept in good working order at all times, specifically:

  • Pneumatic play detectors must be maintained at least every 6 months.
  • Hydraulic play detectors must be maintained at least every 12 months.

This maintenance must be carried out by the manufacturers or their authorised agent, and the technician must issue a maintenance report detailing any remedial work.

Signed Declarations Are Now Mandatory

A key addition to the guidance is the requirement for a signed and dated declaration confirming that the equipment is in good working order after maintenance has been completed.

This ensures that all MOT equipment used for testing is safe, accurate and compliant. Giving both the testing stations and their customers greater confidence in their garage equipment.

Industry Alert from the GEA

The Garage Equipment Association (GEA) informed all of its members of these important DVSA updates on 23rd October 2025. The GEA continues to work closely with the DVSA to ensure all garage equipment suppliers and MOT stations remain fully compliant.
