DVSA Update for Class 4 MOT Bay Jacking Beams

The DVSA has released Special Notice 04-25, setting out updated requirements for all Class 4 MOT bay jacking beams, coming into force from 1st April 2026.

If you operate or supply MOT equipment, these changes are important to know as they affect both new installations and replacement jacking beams going forward.

What’s Changing?

From the 1st April 2026, all new and replacement jacking beams supplied to Class 4 MOT sites must have:

  • A minimum lifting capacity of 2.0 tonnes.
  • A minimum span of 1700mm between lifting pad centres.

This update gives the industry time to phase out older or non-compliant stock and ensure all equipment meets the latest DVSA specifications well ahead of the 2026 deadline.

You can read the full notice from GOV.UK here.

Update on Dual-Class MOT Bays

Following the announcement, the Garage Equipment Association (GEA) has clarified further details after consultation with the DVSA.

For dual-approved MOT bays (Class IV & VII), both sets of requirements must be met. This means:

  • A minimum lifting capacity of 2.6 tonnes.
  • A minimum span of 1700mm between pad centres.

While the DVSA has confirmed there are no current changes planned for Class VII MOT bays, any dual-approved bays must comply with both standards from April 2026.
